I have never watched the Firefly series before. But I have it now. Do you have any watching recommendations such as don't watch the pilot?
I know for dollhouse I would say don't watch the pilot (ever) and don't watch episode 13 from either season until you have seen all the rest you care to see from both seasons.

Watch them in the order on the disk..not in the order of the airdates, and if you haven't seen Serenity yet, watch the whole series BEFORE you watch the movie.

Good to know because I was going to watch them in airing order. The order was really confusing.
On the first disk, there is "Serenity part 1 and 2". I think this is not the movie because that is an entirely different DVD. Should I watch those first? So far I have only seen one episode.

Yes, definitely watch Serenity 1 and 2 as soon to first as you can. They are the intended pilot, rather than "Train Job," which is a lot of fun, but more like the equivalent of Dollhouse's aired pilot (i.e. one Fox wanted instead of the original pilot). The titles are a little confusing, but as you already guessed, "Serenity 1 & 2" are different from
Serenity
the separate movie.
I strongly encourage you to watch the episodes in the DVD order (which is what Joss Whedon intended), not the weird order that Fox unfortunately aired them in. ...Besides, then you'd have to figure out when to watch the ones that didn't actually air...! Hope you love the show!

It's funny you ask because I was at a Derby party today. The hosts, friends of my husband, had just bought their house recently. They were not quite finished with the basement but they had a really great home theater setup (recliner couches, projecter TV). Sitting on the floor propped up by the wall was this framed picture of a girl that looked like Caylee(sp) from Firefly. I walked closer and saw behind the couch were framed pictures of many of the cast. That was... weird... unexpected.
"You have pictures from Firefly?" I asked. He was surprised I knew who they were. But he was in the middle of something so I didn't have a chance to ask him much more. Later, when I mentioned the pictures were from a TV show, his geek friends (and I mean that in the nicest of ways) corrected me saying "No. 'THE' TV show."
His wife said she had never seen Firefly so they must not have been her interior decor choice.
But I will try to email him and see if he is a fan of the other shows. If so, I'll tell him about Whedonfest.
To answer your question, Jjsquid, I'm only in the 2nd DVD. If my husband had interest in watching, I'm sure we'd be through the series by now. But since not, I don't want to hog the TV.
I really like the show. I just saw the episode where the strange woman appeared on the ship and claimed to be the captain's wife. I thought it was really funny.

Saffron/Mrs Reynolds was played by Christina Hendricks, who is now the constant newsmaker from the show Mad Men, and was recently elected by some magazine as "the hottest woman on the planet". Between things like that, Castle, and V...Firefly continues to have an ongoing effect on TV, even though Fox chose to cancel it without even airing everything.

I finally finished watching all the Firefly episodes. Were they not given any warning of the cancellation? I ask because there was no finale.
I can see why there are so many diehard fans. It's a great show and there wasn't a single disappointing episode.
Dollhouse is still my favorite show of all time though.

Yeah.... Not only was there no warning of cancellation, but FOX didn't even air all the episodes filmed. Serenity, the movie, works as somewhat of a finale (though it could have continued from there, it wraps things up and creates a nice end, too.)

They did get notice of cancellation while filming "The Message" ..and many of them consider the funeral scene in that episode to be a mourning for the show. I believe Joss is an extra at the funeral.

You know..now that I think about it , there was a really beautiful woman at Dragon Con last year dressed as "Where in the 'Verse is Carmen Sandiego?".Maybe if I was an educational geek I'd be right for her.

I hadn't been to the Whedonites United boards in a little while, and now that WhedonFest's over and I've met you, Purple, this story of you and your husband discovering
Firefly
and being there this weekend is all the cooler! I didn't fully make the connection while I was there. Glad you got him interested in the series too!
(and I thought the Bennett Halverson costume was great! When more attendees actually get to watch season 2 of Dollhouse when it's released, they'll appreciate your concept all the more)
